Somebody explain the concept of speed please? Is it abs. value of velocity

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it \[\left| velocity \right|\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or do you compare acceleration and velocity and see where the signs match up?

OpenStudy (foolaroundmath):

Speed is the absolute value of velocity. \(s = |\vec{v}|\)

OpenStudy (foolaroundmath):

The part where you compare the signs of the acceleration and velocity is when determining if the particle/object is slowing down or speeding up.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so they are basically the same thing?

OpenStudy (foolaroundmath):

Other than the fact that velocity is a vector and speed is a scalar.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank you
