Why is the world round and not flat??

OpenStudy (blues):

Because it's on a planet and planets are round.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, but why is the planet round??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If it was flat then people would fall off.

OpenStudy (agreene):

Gravity. The gravitational force prefers spheres to anything else once mass is large enough--which is why all stars, planets and black holes are spheres. In the case of galaxies (which are obviously very massive) they dont assume spheres because they aren't a single bit of mass--but rather a collection.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The gravity of Earth would pull in the earth if it was flat anyway, and bring it in until is is round. Also, it is impossible for a world to be flat, because it would then be 2 dimensional, and as far as I know, we could not live on a 2-D world, and no where else in the universe is 2-D. I don't know that much though, so anybody can feel free to chime in and correct me.
