Well for one thing electricity was never 'invented' per say. Nearly 100 years and and the invention of the printing press occurred near the same time if we are talking about Gutenberg. Yet near the 20th century which is 100 years ago we first see real examples of print media which is one form of visual media however, printing and art have been around since the dawn of man. So my best guess is nearly 100 years ago.

For the second question they are most definitely used to create parallel structure. The term parallel structures simply refers to similar grammatical forms. The forms can be words, phrases, clauses, or even sentences. Coordinating conjunctions always link parallel structures. The coordinating conjunctions are (and), or, (but) [which are always coordinating conjunctions], and (so), (for), (yet) [which can be coordinating conjunctions but are also used in other ways].
