A dependent clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb but does not express a complete thought. It doesn't make a complete sentence so it cannot stand alone. A dependent clause is marked by a dependent clause word. These are words added to an independent clause which turns it into a dependent clause. example : Terry studied in the library for her history test. (independent clause) When Terry studied in the library for her History test (dependent clause - does not make a complete thought) Lets look at the problem....... (1) The trucks crisscrossed the city (Independent or dependent) ? Doesit make a complete thought ? (yes it does) (2) The drivers spread sand on icy patches (Independent or dependent) ? Does it make a complete thought ? The reason I left " and " out is because it is a conjunction - small words that can join two independent clauses. (3) So that drivers could safely get to work (Independent or dependent) Does it express a complete thought ? Think about it ?........no it doesn't. " so that" is the dependent clause words. So your answer is the last one.
