Can someone find mistakes or improve some of my sentences? (just one paragraph)

Since childhood I’ve been fond of literature. When I couldn’t find the answers to my complicated questions, there was always a book that did. Hispanics, especially first generation students like me, oftentimes have parents who do not speak our native language, English. Language can either be a pathway or barrier to communication. I grew up with parents that were disconnected to part of my world. Books spoke the language that linked me to the society I lived in. Being born of a different country than your parents proves to be challenging; it confuses you about whom you are, however, it also allows you to be part of more than one world. Books, ideas thoughtfully and masterfully portrayed in writing, provide readers with a deeper understanding of their surroundings, which is why I turned to books growing up. When I began taking advanced English classes, I realized that the work I was doing in class, analyzing, finding rhetoric, and such, was something that I’d been doing as a hobby. I never thought about what I was doing as work, it just came to me naturally. Writing has also been a hobby of mine for years now. Sometimes I’d spend hours writing sketches of poems, songs, or concepts for a book. At the time, I didn’t think of it as anything else but a hobby, but as I was urged to deliberate on a career, I realized that writing is the job a truly want.

You did a great job! I really enjoyed reading it. I fixed a couple little wording errors and a few commas here and there, but other than that, it was brilliant!
