the two triangles are similar, so you can say this 9/5 = (8 + x-5)/(x-5) solve that for x to get your answer

9/5 = (8 + x-5)/(x-5) 9/5 = (x+3)/(x-5) 9(x-5) = 5(x+3) does that help?
