I love this problem! (mostly because it's so practical and not contrived, like so many math problems can be) :-) Here's how I'd tackle it. I would look at a calendar. I just glanced at an online calendar and noticed that Aug. 9 and Jan. 3 both fall on the same day of the week. We don't have to worry about Leap Years (because the period does not include February). So, just look at the calendar to determine how many weeks this period entails. Then convert that to days. That will be much easier than dealing with the irregular number of days in months (some have 30, some have 31 for the period we're dealing with). Hope that was helpful! Good luck!
So.. 31 days in august. 30 in september 31 in october 30 in november 31 in December and then u can count those 3 days in January. So if we take 9 away from 31 we get 22. so 22+30+31+30+31+3 = 147 days
