How do plants adapt to environments?

it need a long amout of years or hundreds of years in order to adapt to their environment. for example, you will need to put lots of plant in the desert. that particular plant will not survive in the desert but you still 100 acres of them in the desert. many will die but a few little will live. so now the offspring of the plant will have a better way of surviving the desert. but plan may have change it gene and probably store more water like the catcus. eventually whithin years, the plant will be immune to the heat.
