Two different relationships are shown below. Relationship 1: A graph is shown that has the following points plotted: one comma twelve, two comma six, three comma four, and four comma three. Relationship 2: y = twelvex a) Identify each relationship as direct or inverse variation. b) Calculate the constant of each relationship and explain how you arrived at your answer. c) Using complete sentences, explain how the two relationships are different, and how they are similar.

relationship 1: (1,12) (2,6) (3,4) (4,3) relationship 2: y = 12x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

notice in reationship 1, as x increases, y decreases.... in relationship 2, as x increases, y increases.... that should give you a hint as far as answering part a....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its direct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for which one???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 and 1is inverse

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct... now that you know which one is indirect and which one is direct, can you find the constant?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Looking at the first value in each pair, you can see that it increases by one each time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you already said the first relationship is an inverse relationship so: \(\large y=\frac{k}{x} \) plug in one of those points to find k.... for the direct variation, isn't it obvious...???
