In a geometric sequence, how does one find the common ratio? I have the 3rd and 5th numbers...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3rd number is 12, 5th number is 16/3

hartnn (hartnn):

common ratio = r = next term / current term so, u can say r = 2nd term / 1st term = 3rd term/ 2nd term .....and so on

hartnn (hartnn):

here, r= 4th term / 3rd term = 5th term / 4th term from this, u get r^2 = 5th term / 3rd term get that ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think so, thanks :) I'll try it now

hartnn (hartnn):

yeah, ask if u get stuck, or if u have any doubts....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've worked it out to be 2/3... I think that's right. Thanks for your help :)

hartnn (hartnn):

thats correct. welcome ^_^
