Any topic is fair game for a sonnet, or any other form of poetry. Rather than thinking in terms of abstract topics, think of something you can show in words. What can you describe well? What images strike you and stay with you? From there, you can extrapolate and use the images metaphorically, but the sonnet will be better for depicting something sensory - sounds, images, smells, etc.
