Chromatography:
 refers to a set of techniques used to separate different compounds.  The word comes from the Greek chromatos (color) and graphein (to write).  So, as one might guess, chromatography involves separating chemicals and identifying them by color.

as everyone else has said, chromatography is a separatory technique, but the separation is based on the partition coefficients of the substances. There are more specialized techniques of chromatography but that is the main idea.
