a + 25 < 50 Inequalites

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

An inequality is mostly similar to an equation in the way you solve it. You can add the same number to both sides and subtract the same number from both sides. You can also multiply or divide both sides by the same positive number. The difference is that if you multiply or divide both sides by a negative number, the direction of the inequality symbol changes direction.

So divide?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Do as you'd do in an equation. Since 25 is being added to x, you want to undo an addition, so you do the operation that is the reverse of addition, which is subtraction. Subtract 25 from both sides. a + 25 < 50 - 25 -25 ----------------- a < 25 Answer: a < 25 Since you subtracted a number from foth sides, the inequality sign, <, remains the same.
