A way of thinking of absolute number is the distance the number is from zero on the number line. |5| = 5 |-5| = 5 Both 5 and -5 are 5 units away from zero on the number line. The absolute value of 5 and of -5 is 5. An absolute value will always give you either zero or a positive number.
