In free fall, when do we consider that the acceleration due to gravity is positive and negative?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

gravity acceleration is always in the same direction, but, relative to the ground, it is negative when the object is traveling upward and positive when it is traveling downwards.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

grativy is a property og the earth to attract any mass to its center, therefore gravity is always downwards(positif) so when a mass is moving against garvity (upwards) the gravity is negatif

@oddfishout good answer. but the example of that is elevator... when elevator is going up, acceleration is negative cause of opposite of gravity side and when it is going down, it will be positive.
