How did the success of the Ghana Empire contribute directly to its downfall? As it expanded north, it became an easier target for desert nomads in the Sahara. The gold trade led many men to leave their farms, creating crop shortages. By leaving the capital to make war, the emperor invited palace revolts. By attracting Arab scholars and traders, Ghana gave up its ancient culture.
