if (9x^2-21x-20)/(x-1) is equal too 9x^2-12x-8 with a remainder of 8. how do i write that down ? is it like this ---> (x+8)(9x^2-12x-8)

OpenStudy (zehanz):

It is:\[9x^2-12x-8+\frac{ 8 }{ x-1 }\]Think of it as a long division like 23:5 this gives 4, with a remainder of 3, which you couls write as 4 + 3/5.

oooh. okay thank you. i understand now.

OpenStudy (zehanz):

In reality, dividing your formula by x-1 would not give 9x^2 etc, but something of degree 1 instead of 2.
