It appears sporophytes are developed from the zygote (egg) after meoisis during sexual reproduction in mosses. Additional cells form and elongate into a "foot", with one end anchored onto the gametophyte and the other end into a seta (the stalk) which bears a capsule of spores. http://www.esu.edu/~milewski/intro_biol_two/lab_2_moss_ferns/images/moss_life_cycle.gif
