Clara Barton Clarissa Barton was born on December 25, 1821 and died at the age of 90 on August 12, 1912 in her home in Glen Echo, Maryland. She was born and raised in North Oxford, Massachusetts. She had two brothers and two sisters. Dorothy, Sally, David and Stephen. Barton became a teacher at the age of 17 and taught in North Oxford.. She became the first women to work in the U.S government patent office because men didn’t like working with women and she also became the first American to wear the Red Cross.
