Clarissa Barton was born on December 25, 1821 and died at the age of 90 on August 12, 1912 in her home in Glen Echo, Maryland. She was born and raised in North Oxford, Massachusetts. She had two brothers and two sisters. Dorothy, Sally, David and Stephen. Barton became a teacher at the age of 17 and taught in North Oxford.. She became the first women to work in the U.S government patent office because men didn’t like working with women and she also became the first American to wear the Red Cross. She resigned from the Red Cross in 1904. The Red Cross was a symbol for the volunteers to wear during battles. After her mother passed away, she moved to Washington D.C and started learning about the government. Barton wanted to help with the injured in the Civil War so she volunteered. People called her “The angel of the battlefield.” While she visited Europe, she worked with an organization known as the International Red Cross. It was founded in 1881, and she served as its first president. Barton helped find over 22,000 missing men and learned more about those who were still missing. She never took salary from the organization and if she did, she used her funds to support relief efforts. After leaving the Red Cross, Barton remained active, giving speeches and lectures. She wrote a book titled The Story of My Childhood, which was published in 1907. Clara Barton is my hero because she volunteered to do things no one else would. She was a brave woman who gave her time to help people that absolutely needed it. She is truly an American hero.
