The Maunder Minimum was a period (roughly 1645 to 1715) in which there was very little sunspot activity, this coinciding with colder than average winter temperatures, particularly in the UK and parts of Europe. It seems reasonable to assume these were linked, though it's not certain how 'global' the effects were.
