Do many people major in nuclear engineering? Is this a popular major?

It is my personal opinion the nuclear engineering is becoming less viable major because of the unpopularity of nuclear power. With every accident or nuclear incident, more planned reactor installations are cancelled or put on hold. When was the last time a decommissioned reactor was replaced? At least in the US. Waste disposal is still an issue. In foreign countries nuclear reactors are discourage because of the possibility of making weapon grade fissionable material. Reactor represent terrorist target whose destruction or damage could have significant collateral impact. That said there are reactors that do not make weapon grade material. An there are safer designs and there are places where you could build them with most likely no danger of any radioactivity release and the containment of radioactive waste is probably solve. BUT, the psychological issues and political issues still exist i.e. zero risk (that is we seem to want) ,or Its OK but "not in my backyard".

There are many useful and necessary application of off-shoots of the nuclear energy industry including medical and industrial as I assume you know. And these will continue. However the issues I mentioned with power reactors will probably continue and until when and if they are overcome the I believe the need for nuclear engineers will be minimal. There will be some need as in replacing retiring engineers and building, installing and maintaining new reactors that might be being shipped to foreign countries.
