4x + 4 < 0 | : 4 x + 1 < 0 => x < -1. -3x < -6 | : -3 (since we divide by a negative number, the inequality turns!) x > 3 Hence x must be smaller than -1 or greater than 3. The graph of the solution should only depict values smaller than -1 or greater than 3, in other words anything not in [-1, 3]
