Who forced Napoleon Bonaparte to abandon plans for an American empire?

It was a combination of factors - the on-going wars in Europe meant that Napoleon could not afford to send troops to America to establish and guard a colony there. Another factor was that he had no control over the shipping lanes and this was reinforced by the loss at the Battles of the Nile and then Trafalgar and finally Thomas Jefferson persuaded him to sell France's colonial possessions in North America - the Louisiana Territory to the US which gave Napoleon some much needed capital to continue with the European wars.
