Can someone explain to me the steps that i need to take to construct a congruent triangle using SSS

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

SSS means side-side-side, and it means that if three sides of one triangle are congruent to three sides of another trianlge, the triangles are congruent. Once you have the lengths of the sides of one triangle, use the same lengths to construct the other triangle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

all sides need to be equal:)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Are you constructing it with a pencil, straight edge, and a compass?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think all ssides not only must be equal but also congruent :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, i am constructing with a pencil, straightedge, and compass. Are the steps used in SSS similar to the used in SAS?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The steps are different because you need to transfer three side lengths, and not two side lengths and an angle measure. Then this is what you need to do. Let's call the given triangle ABC. The new triangle will be called A'B'C'. 1. With the straight edge and pencil, draw a line longer than side AB. Then mark a point on the line and call that point A' (read A prime). This point on your congruent triangle corresponds to point A on your given triangle. 2. Using the compass centered on point A, open it to point B, get the length of side AB in your original triangle, and mark off that distance on your line by centering the compass on A'. The new point on the line is now marked B' 3. Now center the compass at B and open it to C. Now you have the length of BC, you need to transfer this length to your construction. Center the compass on B', and draw an arc on one side of the line A'B'. 4. This step gets the length of AC. Center the compass at A and open it to C. Now using that lenth of AC, center the compass at A' and draw and arc until it intersects the other arc. The point of intersection is point C', so label it C'. 5. Connect A' with C' and B' with C' with segments. There is your congruent triangle by SSS. You transfered each side length to the construction. That is why it was constructed by SSS.

Thank You so much! :) One last question: i am new to openstudy and don't know how to a medal...i would like to though.
