In the first equation, the direction of the parabola is upward, because the x2 term is positive, and the vertex is at (1,-1). In the second equation, the direction of the parabola is downward, because the x2 term is negative, and the vertex is at (1,-1). Both of the equation's vertex is at (1,-1) and they both have 2 real solutions.
