The United States possesses the ten largest warships in the world, aircraft carriers of the Nimitz class. Suppose one of the ships bobs up to float 11.0 cm higher in the ocean water when 50 fighters take off from it in a time interval of 25 min, at a location where the free-fall acceleration is 9.78 m/s^2. The planes have an average laden mass of 29,000 kg. Find the horizontal area enclosed by the waterline of the ships.
from what I understand, It's archimedes principle
yes it is.
Ok, so this is basically an Archimedes's Principle question. First find the total weight of the 50 fighters that took off (it doesn't matter how long it took them to depart). This must equal the weight of water that the displacement is reduced by. The weight of the water is mg where m is density*volume. Volume is area*depth. It is all plug-n-chug from here.
assume that the ships have the shape of a triangular prism and proceed|dw:1356539615553:dw|
