[9.01] Determine whether the graph of y = −2x2 − 3x + 10 opens up or down and whether it has a maximum or minimum point. Down and Maximum Down and Minimum Up and Maximum Up and Minimum

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

a is negative, so can you give an estimate of what hte graph is shaped like?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

opens down

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

Yup.|dw:1356634529314:dw| does that look like a maximum or a minimum?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maximum!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If the coefficient on the x^2 term is negative the graph opens downward and has a maximum. If the coefficient on the x^2 term is positive the graph opens upwards and has a minimum. If you can't remember this plot the graph on your calculator.

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

Yup.

thanks for the medals!
