How Does a Compound differ from its component elements ?

OpenStudy (flacalol):

When elements combine to form a compound, they undergo a chemical change and give up their original properties. A compound is a pure substance in its own right, and has its own unique properties that are different from those of its constituent elements. compounds are not easily separated back into their constituent elements by physical means.
