Describe how enzymes affect chemical reactions and explain why this makes enzymes important to living thing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Enzymes are biological catalysts. A "catalyst" is a substance that jump-starts a chemical reaction. It speeds up the chemical reaction. And when that chemical reaction happens, the catalyst is not broken down by the reaction. Enzymes are special proteins that our bodies use, in order to jump-start the chemical reactions that happen inside our bodies. The sum of all the chemical reactions in our bodies is called "metabolism." Our metabolism is the entirety of all the chemical reactions that our cells need, in order to stay alive. Without a metabolism, we wouldn't be able to survive.
