If the parallel sides of a trapezoid contained by the lines y = -x + 5 and y = -x - 9, what equation represents the line contained by the midsegment?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Hint: Say there is a vertex at the point A(0,5), which is the y-intercept of y = -x+5, and there is another adjacent vertex at B(0,9), which is the y-intercept of y = -x+9 The midsegment will be the line that is parallel to the parallel sides and it will go through the midpoint of the segment AB
