Why was the attack on pearl harbor an important turning point in world war II?

It brought the United States into the war silencing the isolationists who wanted it to stay out to prevent jumping into another conflict. A few days afterwards, and just as surprised at the Japanese attack as the Americans were, Adolf Hitler declared war on the United States.
