x + 1 = 3y

x = 3y - 1

3(3y - 1) - 4 = 5y + 1

9y - 3 - 4 = 5y + 1

9y - 7 = 5y + 1

9y = 5y + 8

4y = 8

y = 2

x + 1 = 3y
replace y with 2 to get 3*2

x + 1 = 6
and
x = 5
