A tree casts a shadow of 28 feet. At the same time, a biologist who is 7 feet tall casts a shadow of 2 feet. How tall is the tree? 8 feet 14 feet 78 feet 98 feet

OpenStudy (lilai3):

the answer is 8 feet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's a proportion \[\frac{h}{28}=\frac{7}{2}\] if h is the height of the tree

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's not 8

OpenStudy (lilai3):

because, if you did a proportion: x over 28 equals to 2 over 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7 over 2

OpenStudy (lilai3):

then you just solve for x, which is 8 (you cross multiply)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg whats the answer then!? :'o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in a proportion, the numerators have to refer to the same thing, and the denominators have to refer to the same thing. In my proportion, the numerators were referring to the height of the object, and the denominators were referring to the length of the shadow.

OpenStudy (lilai3):

i don't think it's 98 tho... i am wrong? o, gee, @tomlinbabe i am very sorry oh i see my mistake... it's the TREE THAT CASTS A SHOADOW and it's asking for its real height, not the shadow...ohhhhh... ur right @aacehm i'm sorry tomlin

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so whats the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

use the proportion that I gave you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

98?
