help with this triangle thing, i draw pic and state question, give medal :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

B ia the midpoint of AC. D is the midpoint of CE Solve for x, given BD = 3x + 5 and AE = 4x + 20.

hartnn (hartnn):

is this question related to 'Similarity of triangles' topic ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i believe so yeah :)

hartnn (hartnn):

good, so can you prove two triangles similar given enough information /conditions ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, you can :)

hartnn (hartnn):

ok,so B is the midpoint of AC. ---->then CB/CA =... ?

hartnn (hartnn):

can u find the ratio CB/CA ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but dont you need one of the numbers?

hartnn (hartnn):

from CB=BA, you can find CB/CA

hartnn (hartnn):

hint : CA=CB+BA

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, you can

hartnn (hartnn):

so, CB/CA=...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

BA?

hartnn (hartnn):

let me find you the ratio.... CA=CB+BA but CB=BA CA=CB+CB =2CB so, CB/CA = 1/2 got this ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes :) i understand it all

hartnn (hartnn):

in exactly same manner.,CD/CE=.... ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

DE

hartnn (hartnn):

the ratio ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

CE is just CD and DE put together. CD and DE are the same length so CD times 2 is CE. all that is correct..which would mean that X has to be the same and after you find X, both equations should equal the same. but how do i find X?

hartnn (hartnn):

actually CE is 2 times CD so, CD/CE =1/2 also angle C is common to both triangles CBD and CAE so, both these triangles are similar. hence their sides are proportional hence, BD/AE also equals 1/2 ---> AE=2BD 4x+20 =2(3x+5) find 'x' from here :)

hartnn (hartnn):

4x+20 = 6x +10 2x= 10 x=5 :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i see now what you did. ok, thanks, thats cool :)

hartnn (hartnn):

welcome ^_^ ask if any doubts ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope, im good :) thanks soo much, i have a huge assienment and out of 19 questipns, only 2 to go, and i did everything else on my own..thanks :)
