You don't necessarily need to make it longer, just add more information. And I think this would be a history question :)
When the time came for Douglas and Lincoln to fight for presidency, Douglas was the clear winner in the general population's eyes. His ideas were less radical than Lincoln's (give examples). But, looking at how the election turned out, Douglas clearly spread himself too thin, receiving less votes than desired.
