If 2x-2y=6 is parallel to 9y=bx +12, what is b?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Think about it, what do 2 straight lines need to be pararell?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's that they don't intersect?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, they never intersect, and what does it matematically mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they have something in common..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

remember, the slope!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They have the same slope.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Pls. explain...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have the equation of a line, which is usually given in the general form Ax+By+c=0

OpenStudy (hba):

\[Slope=m=\frac{ -coefficient \ of \ x }{ coefficient \ of \ y }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in your case, you have it put in a different way, with the y solved, that's what we call the explicit form of the equation of the line

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and so, to calculate the slope DIRECTLY just by seeing the equation, we have a trick

OpenStudy (anonymous):

IF they give you the equation in the general form, Ax+By+c = 0, the slope is -A/B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now, if you have it in the explicit form, y=mx+n, what would be the slope in there? try it

OpenStudy (hba):

@AmberCat21 Do you even get a word.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Tic Tac Tic Tac

OpenStudy (hba):

@GCR92 Always try to simplify it dude. We need to make it look as simpler as possible :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks, I know what you mean, but the ammount of concepts that one needs to DOMINATE to really know math is so big that sometimes i just can't explain something in 2 words

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Amber you still alive?

OpenStudy (hba):

Well amber left :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

should we answer or wait for him to come back @hba

OpenStudy (hba):

Well, giving direct answers or providing the whole solution is not allowed on OS @GCR92 We do not want the answerers to do all the work,we would like the asker to participate in the solution though :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@hba got it, thanks, let just see if he comes back.

OpenStudy (hba):

@GCR92 Hmm :)
