What is the solution of the inequality -6x-17>8x+25? A. X>3 B. X<3 C. X>-3 D. X<-3

Add 17 to both sides.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-6x - 17 > 8x + 25 (you want to get the x's on one side and everything else on the other side) -6x - 8x - 17 > 8x - 8x + 25 (I subtracted 8x from both sides so it cancels out on the right side) - 14x - 17 > 25 (now I want to move the 17 to the right side to get the x by itself) -14x - 17 + 17 > 25 + 17 (I added 17 to both sides to cancel out the 17 on the left side) -14x > 25 + 17 -14x > 42 (now you have to divide by -14 to get x by itself...remember dividing by a negative it changes the inequality sign.) -14x/-14 < 42/-14 x < - 3 ------> Your answer D
