George Johnson invested some money at 3.5% interest, and $5000 more than three times this amount at 4%. He earned $1440 in interest. How much did he invest at 4%?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good lord

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lets call the amount invested at \(3.5\%\) say \(x\) then the amount invested at \(4\%\) is \(3x+5000\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we know \[0.03x+0.04(3x+5000)=1440\] and see need \(x\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*need

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this time multiply by 100 and get \[3x+4(3x+5000)=144,000\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 15x=124,000

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whoa another mistake on my part , it was \(3.5\%\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im lost lol
