For electrostatics this concept is not necessary but is useful.For understanding its subtelities you should go deep into time dependent electromagnetic phenomena.
Suppose you have two charged particles q1 and q2 in accelerated motion.What is the cosmic speed limit?Speed of light right?It is the maximum speed at which a signal or information can go from one point to another.Thus the effect of any motion of q1 on q2 cant arise instantaneously.There will be some time delay between the effect(force on q2) and the cause(motion of q1)It is precisely here where we need the concept of electric field.The accelerated motion of q1 produces EM waves,which propagates with speed of light,reach q2 and cause a force on q2.The notion of electric field fabulously account for the time delay.So they are treated as physical entities and not mere mathematical entities.

No as i believe.. electric field.. or for that matter force fields are introduced to merely try and explain how non contact forces work in the first place!!.. so there is this invisible forcefields.. and any charge in this field experiences a force!
