OpenStudy (goten77):

simple order of operations question.... problem is that ive heard 2 stories question below

OpenStudy (goten77):

\[6\div 2(2+1)=?\]

OpenStudy (goten77):

i know order of operations is par thesis 1st... so it becomes \[6\div 2(3)\] but then isnt it multiplication 1st then division? or arent they on the same level? or does that parenthesis around the 3 make any change?.... ive heard stories now

OpenStudy (hba):

9

OpenStudy (hba):

We can follow, PEMDAS or BODMAS.

hartnn (hartnn):

not again!

OpenStudy (hba):

BODMAS means Bracket of division multiplication addition and subtraction.

OpenStudy (goten77):

so basically \[6\div 2(3) = 6\div 2 \times 3\]

OpenStudy (goten77):

and the parenthesis around 3 has no effect?

OpenStudy (hba):

Not in this case.

OpenStudy (goten77):

well since what your saying is true * i believe* that means on a old question on here some1 told me a different story and i didnt feel like arguing .... but yes he obviously told them wrong but oh well.. just making sure

hartnn (hartnn):

when you have only multiplications and division, the order of evaluation is from left to right. and a(b) is ecactly same as a*b.

OpenStudy (goten77):

thats what i thought @hartnn but this guy said it was multiplication then division..... and i knew it had to b wrong

hartnn (hartnn):

multiplication and division have exactly equal priorities.
