What are two ways in which to describe motion?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm..interesting I guess 1 way would be to say "An object is said to be in motion if it's distance from a fixed point changes with time"...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My textbook says the following: (Will you give me two minutes to type what it says?)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Take your time :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

One way to describe the motion of an object is by how it changes position. There are two ways to describe how something changes position. One way is to describe the entire path the object travels. The other way is to give only the starting and stopping points.

Imagine yourself on a hiking trip. By following the trail, you will walk 22 km but end up only 12 km from ehen you started. The total distance you will travel is 22 km but end up only 12 km northeast lf were you started. Displacement is the distance and direction between starting and ending points. Your displacement is 12 km northeast.

Thats it. I hope I did not take too long.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nah.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Will that information provide the information needed to answer the question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good. I wrote down * By how it changes position. What could I write for the second way?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*By using displacement ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, that'll work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Great. Thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure thing :)
