Sharecropping. They were ejected from previous conditions of slavery, but had no cash money to buy land and tools, and few skills other than farming. One of the solutions was to return to the plantation -- sometimes even the same from which they'd escaped slavery -- and come to a deal with the owner. I'll farm your land, and pay "rent" in the form of a share of the crops I grow, keeping the rest to feed myself and my family, and possible selling for cash money to improve my capital situation.
