Remember, protons inside an atom cannot be modified. check for the 12th place in the periodic table... Mg magnesium, now what about the electrons? there should be as many as protons, then this is an ion with some charge different than neutral, lacking 2 negative particles leave it with 2 positive charges, therefore its 2+ Mg (2+) notice the charge into parenthesis, not to be confused with Mg2 a pair of atoms.
