Help :/ Choose the correct description of the graph of the compound inequality 2x + 5 > 9 and 5x less than or greater to 30 A number line with an open circle on 2, shading to the left, and a closed circle on 6, shading to the right. A number line with an open circle on 2, a closed circle on 6, and shading in between. A number line with a closed circle on 2, shading to the left, and an open circle on 6, shading to the right. A number line with a closed circle on 2, an open circle on 6, and shading in between.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

2x + 5 > 9 2x + 5-5 > 9-5 2x > 4 2x/2 > 4/2 x > 2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So 2x + 5 > 9 turns into x > 2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

5x <= 30 5x/5 <= 30/5 x <= 6 ------------- So 5x <= 30 turns into x <= 6

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

this means 2x + 5 > 9 and 5x less than or greater to 30 is the same as x > 2 and x <= 6

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

assuming that the "less than or greater to" is actually "less than or equal to"

You can solve an inequality for x the same way you would solve an equation for x with only 1 little difference. If you multiply or divide both sides of the equation by a negative, then you have to switch the direction of the inequality arrow.
