case study question: stomach and duodenal ulcers have been associated with stress and anxiety. in an attempt to decrease gastric secretion, physicians once severed a branch of the vagus nerve that carries impulses to the stomach. why was the nerve severed?

OpenStudy (jadedry):

I believe it is because the nerves were severed, impulses sent from the brain to the stomach to produce gastric acid (Which I assume would be wrongly increased under the influence of stress and anxiety) would hinder the number (and hence total strength) of impulses sent to the stomach to produce acid. Resulting in less. Just a hypothesis.
