need help! what's the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first you could set it up like a proportion. so it would be 42/6=x/32-x then cross multiply and solve for x

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Corresponding sides of similar triangles are in proportion. 42/6 = x/(32 - x) Cross multiply and solve for x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol nice pretty much same reply @mathstudent55 xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol! so you do 42 divided by 6 first? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no you cross multiply... in other words, 42(32-x) <-- distribute, then 6(x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you do 41 x 32?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

42*32 then 42*(-x) first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then 42 x 32= 1344 , but then how do you do 42 x (-x) ? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would be -42x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh so then you do 1344/-42x ? :)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Cross multiply: 42(32 - x) = 6x Distribute 42 on left side: 1344 - 42x = 6x Add 42x to both sides: 1344 = 48x Divide both sides by 48: x = 28

OpenStudy (anonymous):

^^ right lol i was just trying to give it to you step by step to where you could get the answer xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol! it's fine..I'm really bad at this sorry! so wait, if x= 28 on that side, then do you have to do the other side?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for the smaller triangle? 32-28 but all the question said was to find the value of x and you did

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh...I've been stuck on this problem for days now xD so it's just x= 28?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol yesh x=28 :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Omygosh thank you so much your a life saver!! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ha your welcome but @mathstudent55 pretty much did the problem xD

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You were only asked to calculate x, so you're done. You were not asked to find the lengths of AC and CD.
