What is the relationship between velocity and speed?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Speed is a scalar and velocity is a vector. Velocity is speed and direction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|v| = s

I already posted a response, but I cannot find it. My response was that speed is a scalar quantity only specifying the magnitude of distance covered over a time period; whereas, velocity, a vector, not only specifies the magnitude of the distance covered in a time period, it also specifies the direction.
