OpenStudy (anonymous):

The Gibbs free energy is equal to the amount of energy available in an isolated thermodynamic system at constant temperature and pressure to do work above the mechanical or expansive work. It is useful in determining properties of chemical reactions such as if they give off energy spontaneous or require energy to progress. Also useful for electrochemical reactions where non mechanical work is done.
