A group of 4 people equally share the cost of a meal, including tax and tip. The price of the meal equals m. Tax is 8% of the meal’s price and the tip will be 20% of the meal’s price. For the expression below, choose (A) True if the expression correctly represents each person’s share of the total cost of the meal. Choose (B) False if it does not. 1/4m + 0.07m
True.
Thank you!
What class is this for? The answer actually might vary depending on what kind of math you're doing.
Algebra 1
You might want to get clarification from your teacher. The question is phrased oddly. We don't know if the tip is equal to 20% of the whole meal INCLUDING tax or not, so I can't really give an adequate answer.
Ok! Thank you!
Sorry I can't tell you the exact answer, that should help though!
What about this one? A group of 4 people equally share the cost of a meal, including tax and tip. The price of the meal equals m. Tax is 8% of the meal’s price and the tip will be 20% of the meal’s price. For the expression below, choose (A) True if the expression correctly represents each person’s share of the total cost of the meal. Choose (B) False if it does not. m -- + 0.28 4
That's false for sure.
Ok! Thanks!
And this? A group of 4 people equally share the cost of a meal, including tax and tip. The price of the meal equals m. Tax is 8% of the meal’s price and the tip will be 20% of the meal’s price. For the expression below, choose (A) True if the expression correctly represents each person’s share of the total cost of the meal. Choose (B) False if it does not. 0.32m
This should help for every problem of this type: If you have 4 people sharing a meal, let's say there is no tax or anything, the equation for each person's share of the cost is:\[\frac{ m }{ 4 }\] If you have tax or are adding a tip, you have to add some value to that, but this is the base equation. Does that help enough for you to answer this one on your own?
True. Correct?
It's false. If you think about it, let's just say the cost of the meal is $10. Each person pays one fourth of that, makes sense? 1/4th of $10 is $2.50, so that's what each person pays if there is no tax. The equation they provided you with says .32m is equal to 1/4th of m, which it's not. Their equation tells us that .32 x 10 is equal to 1/4 x 10. Do it on a calculator if it helps, you'll see that .32 x 10 = 3.20 and 1/4 = .25, so 1/4 x 10 is equal to .25 x 10.
